▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Jin Guangyao
CANON: The Untamed
CANON POINT: Ep 50
AGE: Rather vague, probably early 30s
BACKGROUND: Overall: https://modao-zushi.fandom.com/wiki/Jin_Guangyao/History
And the differences between the novel and the series: https://modao-zushi.fandom.com/wiki/Jin_Guangyao/History#Web_Series_Divergence
PERSONALITY: Jin Guangyao is a man first and foremost of ambition. The drive to become someone beyond his background, to become so powerful and well-respected that people will learn to look past the situation of his birth, has been the leading factor in almost all of Guangyaos decisions and choices through the series that ultimately led to his downfall. While he adores his late mother, even building a temple on top of the remains of the brothel she used to work at, her profession as a prostitute has been held over his head like a dangling axe from the day he was born, cutting him down at any opportunity and cutting deep. Calling him the”son of a whore” is the quickest way to get put on his shit lost, and Guangyao is absolutely ruthless and merciless to his enemies.
This ruthlessness doesn’t just extend to his enemies, however. He’s killed and hurt everyone from his own father (though well-deserved and possibly one of the greatest kindnesses Guangyao did was offing him even if it was only for his own revenge) to his sworn brothers and closest friends, to even killing his own toddler son in order to claw his way to the top of the world. The only person he’s never truly harmed has been (in his eyes) Lan Xichen, the first person to openly show him kindness and not bring up his birth at all—or at least never brought up against him. I say “in his eyes” because in a way Guangyao has rather skewed views of what it means to not hurt someone. While he’s never directly caused harm to Xichen or to the Gusulan Sect, even supporting them countless times and always trying to do right by him, and then by extension, there’s no denying that Guangyao has severely harmed Xichen on an emotional and psychological level from his manipulations and forcing Xichen to become an unwitting pawn in his schemes. This includes making him an unknowing accomplice into the murder of their third sworn brother, Nie Mingjue, since it was Xichen who taught the guqin to Guangyao that led to him poisoning Mingjue with spirit-infused music to begin with. However there’s no denying that his respect and affection for Xichen is great, since it was Xichen’s final act against him that truly hurt him and drove the betrayal and defeat home. In the end, however, it was this affection Guangyao had for Xichen that saved Xichen again in the end: While the temple crumbled around them, Guangyao begged for Xichen to die with him. When Xichen showed he was going to give in and agree, Guangyao shoves him away to save his life so that he could live at the cost of Guangyao’s own life.
This forms the basis of the tragedy that it was Guangyao’s kindnesses that did him in more than his evil deeds, for Guangyao isn’t an Inherently cruel man. He saved the life of one prostitute of the dozens he hired to help kill his father, despite killing the rest, and it was her being alive that allowed for testimony against what he did, for example. He does love and care for people, but for most it’s a conditional sort of love. He will still use them and discard them as needed, but he’ll feel pity about it, the way one might feel bad for putting down a prized horse that broke its leg—you still love your beloved animal, but they’re not useful anymore so they have to go. He’s described as putting people in three categories: Those he can/has to kill, those he can use, and Lan Xichen. He also cares for the plights of those who are normally below the notice of the upper class, like the commoners and the servants. He’s able to memorize anyone’s name and face after talking to them just once, knowing the names and lives of everyone in his employ. He created the lookout towers in order to protect the smaller and outlying villages and towns that were normally outside the major sects’ notice and were often plagued with problems from monsters as a result.
Guangyao’s biggest driver in his life was seeking the approval of his father. It’s implied that many of the terrible deeds he did was in fact carried out on orders—presumes or directly—from his father in an effort to please him. Despite being treated so poorly, from not even being allowed to touch his nephew to constantly bearing the brunt of his step-mothers anger, he did everything in an effort to be seen as worthy by Jin Guangshan and the rest of the cultivation world as a whole. But after overhearing Guangshan badmouth Guangyao’s mother and dismiss Guangyao himself as not being someone even worth mentioning, despite all that he’d done for Guangshan and the Jin Sect as a whole, Guangyao realized that he’d become a despicable person. His hands already drenched in blood, he gave up caring about that approval and sought revenge instead in the worst, but horrifically fitting, way for Guangshan.
In the end, Guangyao is a man whose own brilliant mind and his inability to accept losing face is the biggest detriment. He’s a brilliant actor, able to lie and flatter and cajole, reading people easily to know the best way to manipulate them and their perceptions; he uses kindness and helplessness as a shield, allowing himself to appear harmless and weaker, able to put his pride aside in order to survive. But in the end he minds too much about others’ perception of him and can’t allow himself to give up all the hard work, the sweat, tears, and literal blood he put into climbing to the top, even when he knows it would make him happier to just go back to being simply “Meng Yao.”
POWERS/ABILITIES: https://modao-zushi.fandom.com/wiki/Jin_Guangyao/Abilities
The most important things are the cultivation, of which his is at a low level. He can create talismans and use low-level cultivation techniques, such as spiritual healing, the transfer of spiritual energy, and using it to render his sword incredibly deadly.
His main talent and weapon lies in his use of ords, however, able to confuse and befuddle and convince people to his way of thinking with just a few choice words. He's very good at using others fears and weaknesses against them and in the final confrontation, everyone is warned not to listen to Guangyao's words because if they do they're already losing.
INVENTORY: - Hensheng, Guangyao's sword.
